Hello,
This is the first note I’m sending out under the banner of Rewilding Euskal Herria, which we have been quietly building this past year. If you’re reading this, it means you’re one of the early people who showed curiosity or encouragement, maybe you joined or subscribed, filled in a questionnaire or said: “Let me know!”. Which ever reason, thank you!
So here we are. It has become real. Rewilding Euskal Herria exists for a simple reason: We want to help the Basque Country become wilder – healthy, resilient and with an abundance of life. Not on paper, not by ticking boxes, but in practical, local and visible ways. We aim for wilder lands and cleaner waters, managed for generations ahead.
This year, we worked behind the scenes: building our website and community, conducting research and aligning our projects, and shaping our vision for large-scale restoration in the Basque Country. It felt like preparing the soil before planting.
In 2025 we also launched our first two flagship projects.
Baso Berria – Connecting fragmented landscapes into a new forest, just behind the coast.
The Basque Whale – Restoring conditions for whales and marine life to thrive in Basque waters.
Rewilding is not about us, it is about the land and the waters. It is about a healthy community and finding and creating opportunities that have a positive impact on our ecosystems.
