Our Mission

Rewilding in action — discover our projects

At Rewilding Euskal Herria, we dream big — because only bold visions can overcome today’s ecological challenges. Reaching them takes patience, perseverance, and countless steps, but inaction will get us nowhere. These projects lay out the path: they set clear goals for the future of the Basque Country, showing what a wilder and more resilient land can look like. Our projects create opportunities for both nature and communities, while securing a healthier future for generations to come. To make these visions real, we are working with landowners, stakeholders, municipalities, and local actors — weaving together the partnerships that rewilding requires.

Baso Berria

Between Ustaritz and Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle lie two forests, rich in life yet still separated. The larger area could be connected to create the great forest of Baso Berria -- a wild heartland where nature can move and thrive freely -- bringing countless benefits: habitats large enough for wildlife to flourish, corridors that allow species to migrate and adapt, soils that store carbon and water, and a cooler, healthier landscape for surrounding communities.

The Basque Whale

For centuries, whales shaped Basque culture — their image still carved into art, logos and imaginations all around the Basque Country. Yet the Basque whale, once common in the Bay of Biscay, was driven to extinction by the 17th century. Protecting marine habitats and reducing threats can make it possible for these magnificent animals to return to Basque waters.

Hundred Wilder Steps

Everyone in Biarritz knows the 100 Steps above Côte des Basques — a favorite spot to watch the sun set over the Atlantic. Though built as terraces to shield the city, they have become a thriving ecosystem. This renewed opportunity offers a glimpse of what is possible, a popular part of a city that also harbors a rich ecosystem. This brings wild nature right to our favorite window on the world.
